Aussie Agius on Moto2 podium in epic Assen finish

Senna Agius will wish he could have his time again after coming up just short of victory in an epic conclusion to the MotoGP curtain raiser at Assen.

Aussie Agius on Moto2 podium in epic Assen finish
Senna Agius finished third behind David Alonso and Manuel Gonzalez in the Moto2 race at Assen.

Blu Cru Pramac Yamaha duo Izan Guevara and Alberto Fernandez led the opening stanza of the Moto2 race before falling back to fourth and ninth respectively.

That left CFMOTO Aspar Racing Team rider David Alonso to fight for the win with the IntactGP teammates Manuel Gonzalez and Agius.

The Australian was a late contender, having taken a conservative approach to begin the 22-lap race in a bid to save his tyres.

Agius briefly ran as high as second until a mistake at De Bult trying to pass Gonzalez opened the door for Alonso to blow by.

“It was a great race,” Agius said.

“I got off to a good start and tried to conserve my tyres, since my riding style puts a bit more strain on the edges, especially at this track, where you’re banking for long times.

“That’s why I focused on riding properly to conserve the tyres.

“I think we managed that exceptionally well. But when I started to push, I couldn’t quite keep up with the two leaders and had to struggle a bit until I found my rhythm.

“I had really good race pace, as we’d already discovered in practice sessions, but I think I could have won today if I’d pushed a bit harder in the middle of the race to keep up with Manu and David.

“I made up the gap, and once I was right there, I waited for the right moment and to find my way.”

An instant #Moto2 CLASSIC 😍

Agius had two attempts at the lead on the penultimate lap and the last. In both instances, he got shuffled out and had to settle for third.

Winner Alonso finished just 0.024s ahead of Gonzalez while Agius was 0.234s back in third.

“If I could ride that last lap again, I’d do it a little differently,” Agius said.

“But we’re back on the podium. A big thank you to the team. We’re really in a good moment right now and just need to stay consistent.

“I’m really happy with everything at the moment. Of course, I want more, I’m hungry for it, and I’d love to get back to work right away.

“I’m looking forward to Germany, where I really like the track and it suits my riding style.

“But for now, I’m just enjoying the moment, standing on the podium in a world championship race is always a reason to smile.”

The performance comes at a crucial time for Agius.

Alonso is set to join Honda in MotoGP while there are rumours aplenty that Agius will join KTM satellite squad Tech3
